Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland, built in 1893 by W.W. Gwyther, is a bank located on Lord Street in Southport. It is designed in the French Renaissance style and constructed from sandstone ashlar. The building has a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and features three and a half storeys with a window arrangement of three to one.

The exterior includes a low plinth made of red granite, string courses between the floors, a prominent cornice, and a parapet with balustrades over the first and third bays. The entrance bay on the right is accentuated by a Tuscan porch that has raised lettering spelling "BANK" on the frieze, along with an enriched swan-neck pediment. This porch protects a round-headed doorway with a keyed architrave and a fanlight featuring foliated metal tracery, also inscribed with "BANK."

There are canted bay windows on the first and second floors, and above the entrance bay, a pilastered and pedimented attic window is set in front of the pavilion roof, which is adorned with scrolled supporters on flanking parapets topped with urn terminals. The three-window section to the left has pilasters on the ground floor, with the outer pilasters displaying channelled rustication. An Ionic screen is present at the first floor in front of recessed windows that have moulded architraves and triple keystones. The second floor features shorter windows with shouldered architraves, and there are three attic dormers, with the central one having a pilastered and segmentally-pedimented architrave. The windows on the second floor and attic level are 1/1 sashes, while the others have altered glazing. The building also has gable chimneys and a ridge chimney. The interior has not been inspected.
