Description
This is a shelter located within Kings Gardens and South Marine Gardens, opposite Coronation Walk in Southport. It was likely built around 1913 and was originally situated opposite No. 42 Stanley Terrace before being moved to its current location. The shelter was manufactured by David King & Son in Glasgow and supplied by William Robson, an ironmonger in Southport.
The structure is made of cast iron and glass, featuring a lead-clad roof. It has an H-plan design under a rectangular roof and is a single storey. The shelter includes cast-iron columns with crocket capitals and elaborate foliated brackets supporting the roof. The dado consists of solid panels adorned with Art Nouveau motifs, while the glazed screens have iron glazing bars that radiate in the overlights. Inside, there are wooden slatted benches in the side and end bays.
This shelter, along with others on the Promenade, forms a significant group.
