Description
The Lifeboat Monument opposite Scarisbrick Avenue in Southport is a monumental obelisk erected on 28 June 1888. It commemorates the loss of the lifeboat "Eliza Fernley" and its 14 crew members in 1886, the commissioning of the lifeboat "Edith and Annie" in 1888, the achievements of two other former lifeboats, and a public holiday celebrating the majority of the Corporation of this borough and the jubilee of Queen Victoria. The monument is made of grey granite and features a base of three square steps, a plinth with corner colonettes, and an obelisk with chamfered corners. The plaque on the south side is blank, while the other plaques are lettered, including one on the north side that records the loss of the "Eliza Fernley" during a storm while attempting to rescue the crew of the German barque "Mexico" on 9 December 1886. This event is also commemorated by the Eliza Fernley monument in the cemetery on Duke Street.
