Description

The war memorial at St Mary's Church in Wavertree is a tall stone structure located on the east side of the church, near the South Drive road entrance. It stands on a small, hexagonal gravel area bordered by a stone kerb, in front of a blocked doorway in the church's east wall.

The memorial features a triangular base with a stone plaque dedicated to the parish members who died during the Second World War. The inscription on the plaque reads: "ALSO IN MEMORY OF MEMBERS OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945."

Above the base is a triangular plinth, which has rectangular stone plaques on each side commemorating those who died in the First World War. The east face reads: "THESE DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914 – 1919." The north-west face states: "THEY COUNTED NOT THEIR LIVES DEAR UNTO THEMSELVES," and the south-west face says: "THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND BY DAY."

Rising from the plinth is a tall, slim triangular pedestal with scrolled feet at each corner. Each side of the pedestal features stone plaques inscribed with the names of the fallen. The pedestal is topped with a shallow cornice adorned with three small scrolls carved in relief. Above this cornice stands a hexagonal, tapering column, which is finished at the top with a simple hexagonal collar.
