Description
The war memorial is situated in the center of St Mary's churchyard, next to Davyhulme Road, north of the Grade II listed Church of St Mary the Virgin. It features a Celtic cross mounted on a stepped plinth, which is surrounded by a very low sandstone wall added in 1960 that creates a raised planting bed. The south face of the cross displays a relief carving of a sword, and the base includes small relief bronze lettering listing the names of 21 men from the parish who were killed, including three family names that appear more than once. Just below, the plinth has additional bronze lettering that states, "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THE CHURCH/ AND SCHOOLS OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The west face of the plinth features the inscription, "REMEMBER BEFORE GOD THE GALLANT SOULS/ WHOSE NAMES ARE WRITTEN HERE," while the east face carries the words, "THEIR MEMORY WILL NEVER DIE."
