Description

The Church of St Michael, located on Urmston Church Road in Flixton, is a Grade II* listed building. The church features a chancel that dates back to the 15th century, while the nave and aisles were constructed in 1756. The chancel was rebuilt in 1815, and the tower has undergone several restorations in 1731, 1824, and 1888. A vestry was added in the 19th century. The church is built of ashlar stone and has a slate roof.

The nave and chancel share a continuous roof, with pitched roofs over the aisles and a central west tower. The south aisle has five bays, and the north aisle has three bays, both featuring a projecting plinth, round-arched windows with impost capitals and keystones, rusticated quoin strips, and an eaves cornice. The south porch is adorned with a gable pediment supported by attached columns. The chancel includes a three-light east window with cusped Y-tracery and weathered diagonal buttresses, which are also found on the 19th-century vestry.

The tower is castellated and consists of three stages, featuring a round-arched west door, a three-light west window, and a broken pediment above a plaque from 1731. The belfry has three-light round-arched openings with hoodmoulds and keystones, topped with finials above the castellations.

Inside, the church has a three-bay nave arcade with round arches supported by Tuscan columns and king-post roof trusses. Notable interior features include a carved stone font, pulpit, and reredos, along with a brass plaque commemorating Richard Radcliffe from 1602 and early 19th-century wall plaques. The church also contains stained glass windows and timber pews.
