Description
The Davyhulme Circle War Memorial is a cenotaph commemorating those who died in the First World War, built in 1924, with additional inscriptions for the Second World War added later. It is made of ashlar sandstone and is situated on a large roundabout island in the center of Davyhulme Circle.
The memorial features a tall, slender, square cenotaph with a base that has low buttresses on the north and south sides. The west face of the base is inscribed with the words 'ROLL OF HONOUR' along with the names of 23 men, including one family name that appears twice, who were killed in the First World War. Below this, there is an inscription that reads: 'TELL ENGLAND YE WHO PASS THIS MONUMENT,/ WE DIED FOR HER AND NOW WE REST CONTENT.' Additionally, there is a later inscription stating 'ALSO THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 - 1945' along with the names of 6 men who died in that conflict.
The shaft of the cenotaph is intricately carved to display a full-height cross on each face, with the upper part of each cross projecting outward at an angle due to the taper of the shaft. Each cross also features a smaller incised, carved cross. At the top of the cenotaph, all four faces have an illuminated brass clock dial that is glazed in opal. Below the clock dials, there is a carved band with relief lettering that reads in an anti-clockwise direction from the west face: 'IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 - 1918'. The east face includes a small timber hatch at the center of the shaft, providing access to the clock mechanism, which consists of a Graham deadbeat escapement and a nickel steel pendulum.
