Description

The Church of All Saints is a Roman Catholic church built between 1867 and 1868 by Edward Welby Pugin. It features rock-faced stone construction and a slate roof, showcasing Gothic Revival architecture. The building includes a nave, aisles, a west bell turret, and an apsidal chancel with a north chapel. The eight-bay nave and aisles have a weathered plinth, weathered buttresses, and a gabled porch. Each bay contains a two-light plate tracery aisle window with hoodmoulds and a sill band, along with two-light Geometrical tracery clerestory windows that have continuous hoodmoulds. The steep roof is adorned with coped gables and pierced ridge tiles. A west rose window is positioned above an arcade of pointed lights and an arched doorway, all flanked by bold weathered and gableted buttresses. The four-bay polygonal chancel features two-light plate tracery windows in each bay beneath a series of coped gables, along with grotesque gargoyles. The 3 x 1 bay side chapel has a steep hipped roof and similar gables above each bay, interrupting a parapet with pierced quatrefoils.

Inside, the arcade arches, piers, and chancel arches are crafted from banded pink and yellow stone, with well-carved foliage capitals. The lofty scissor-braced roof structure springs from angel corbels, and the rib-vaulted chancel is lavishly gilded. The church also features an elaborately carved stone altar and reredos, along with good wall paintings, one depicting Edward Welby Pugin with a plan of the church. The interior includes timber pews and stained glass. The Church of All Saints is considered a notably complete and unspoiled example of Edward Welby Pugin's work, regarded as his best.
