Description
The Queen's Arms is a public house built in 1828, with early 20th-century alterations. It features a brick structure with a Welsh slate roof and has an L-shaped plan, comprising three bars—two in the front range and one in the rear wing. The building is two storeys high and has a three-window range, with horned sash windows throughout, except for a canted bay window to the right of the entrance, which has Edwardian etched glass. The entrance includes a round-headed doorway, and the right-hand gable is adorned with heavy bargeboarding and irregularly-placed sash windows.
Inside, the layout retains separate bar areas. The entrance lobby leads to a vault on the left, which has a panelled bar counter with a screened servery at the lobby end. A hall passage beyond the lobby provides access to a smoke room on the right, featuring baffle screens at the ends of fixed bench seating near the doorway. The smoke room includes a fireplace with an Art Nouveau style surround and a substantial overmantle mirror. Further along, a cross passage leads to a central lounge with fixed bench seating and a canted bay window, and to the right, there is a billiard room with an opening above the bench seating for viewing from the lounge bar. Half-glazed panelled doors with etched glass remain in the bar doorways.
The Queen's Arms was constructed in anticipation of the opening of the Liverpool-Manchester Railway in 1830 and catered to excursion traffic from Manchester. It also served Nasmyth's engineering factory, which has since been demolished but was located immediately north of the pub. This makes it one of the first railway pubs in the world, with its special interest further enhanced by its little-altered interior layout.
