Description

The former Monton Memorial Schools, now in community use, were built in 1888 and designed by Thomas Worthington and J.G. Elgood. The building is of rock-faced stone with a slate roof, and consists of a two-storey, eight-bay main range with a parallel buttressed range to the rear. It is constructed in the Gothic Revival style.

The front elevation features projecting gabled bays one and five. Bay one has a two-light window with two lancets above, while bay five has a three-light mullion and transom window on the ground floor, and a similar window with arched heads and a pointed relieving arch on the first floor. Bays six, seven, and eight have cross casements on both floors, all retaining glazing bars. A three-bay single-storey arcaded porch central to the facade has circular columns with moulded capitals, hoodmoulds, and a coped parapet above a moulded band.

The right return elevation features three gables and a door with a chamfered surround, below a panel inscribed "Monton Memorial Schools 1888." Other elevations have similar window details. The building has prominent ridge chimney stacks. The roofs are steep, with coped gables, finials, and kneelers. The building is included on the list for its group value.
