Description
A.V. Roe House is a house that has been converted into offices, built in the early 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork and a slate roof. The building has a symmetrical front with three bays across and two storeys, along with a rear addition. Notable architectural details include a projecting plinth, dentilled box gutters, and a hipped roof with brick chimney stacks. The central entrance has a panelled door with a fanlight and is framed by an open pediment supported by three-quarter Doric columns. There are two ground-floor and three first-floor four-pane sash windows, each with stone lintels and sills, and the central first-floor window has a stone surround. Similar window openings are found on the sides, some of which are blind, while one retains its original 16-pane sash. The rear addition on the right side features tripartite sash windows. The house was the residence of James Nasmyth from 1836 to 1843, who invented the steam hammer in 1842. It is also the birthplace of A. V. Roe, who lived from 1877 to 1958 and was instrumental in designing, building, and flying the first British aeroplane in 1908, playing a significant role in the development of aviation.
