Description

This early 19th-century milestone is located on the north-east verge of Warrington Road (A57), about 18 metres north-west of the junction with Gilbert Road. It was erected for the Liverpool to Warrington Turnpike and is made of painted ashlar sandstone. The milestone has a triangular shape with a curved top that transitions into an arris, which divides the two side panels. Its base is spherical and features a semi-circular front panel that reads "WHISTON." The rear has a pecked tooled surface with a canted ashlar rectangular recessed panel. The north-west panel is inscribed with "TO / WARRINGTON / IX / MILES," while the south-east panel reads "TO / PRESCOT / I / MILE / TO / LIVERPOOL / IX / MILES." The side panels and arris are painted white, with all lettering in black.
