Description
Nos. 48 and 50 on St Helens Road are a pair of houses that form part of a terrace, built in 1837 as indicated by the rainwater head. The buildings are finished in pebble-dash, likely over brick, with stone dressings and a felted slate roof. They are two storeys tall and consist of three bays, featuring a top cornice. The windows have wedge lintels and 20th-century casements. The entrances are flanked by lintels and include overlights and six-panel doors, with the lower panels flush; one entry has a plank door. There are four chimney stacks.
At the rear, there are two outriggers that were formerly used as watchmakers' galleries. The outrigger for No. 48 is intact and features ground floor segmental-headed windows, one of which has a horizontally sliding sash with glazing bars. There are three entrances at the rear. The first floor has long horizontally sliding sashes, with two windows of three lights and two of five lights, most of which have glazing bars. The interior includes a winding staircase, along with benches and cupboards on the first floor. No. 50 retains some of its original windows, but its interior has not been inspected. This pair of houses is a notable early example of watchmaker's galleries, and one of the few remaining.
