Description
Number 9 is a house with a shop and a former workshop to the rear, located on Prescot Market Place. The main house dates from the early 19th century, while parts of the workshop may be 17th century. The house is constructed of rendered brick, with a slate roof, and the workshop is of random rubble. It is a double-depth house with a rear wing, and has three storeys, arranged with a regular two-window frontage. A raised parapet is shaped to the centre, featuring a moulded cornice. The windows are hornless sashes, with nine panes to the second floor and fifteen panes to the first floor, and are flanked by stucco pilasters. A mid-to-late 19th century shop front has a central doorway, topped by a rectangular overlight, and renewed brick plinth. A doorway to the left-hand side of the house has a panelled door. A large brick stack is visible on the front roof slope to the left. The workshop at the rear is thought to be the earliest free-standing tool and watchmaker's workshop in Prescot – a significant centre of watchmaking in England. It is a plain rectangular building of single storey, with a flag floor, and has been patched in places with brick. The openings have been altered over time.
