Description
No. 17 Atherton Street is a house that is part of a terrace, built around 1790. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and has a Welsh slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and features a regular two-window arrangement. It has a moulded eaves cornice and sash windows on the upper floors, all without horns, with the first-floor windows set under segmental arches. There is a late 19th-century style shop front with a doorway to the right and a ridge stack on the left side.
A notable feature of this building is the well-preserved second-floor watchmaker's workshop, which can be seen from the rear. This workshop includes a 30-pane window with a lintel at eaves level and four principal mullions, one of which has a shaped eaves bracket. The first-floor sash windows are also set under segmental heads. This building is significant as it represents an early phase in the history of watchmaking in Prescot, a town that played a nationally important role in this industry.
