Description

\ 1. 5299 MILTON STREET (West Side) Chaucer County Junior School SD 3347 3/29

II

  1. Early C20. Red brick. Hipped tile roof. 2 storeys. Modillioned eaves cornice. 14 window ranges, 4 at each end breaking forward slightly. Sashes with glazing bars in moulded terracotta surrounds, those on ground floor with idiosyncratically elongated triple keystones linking them with aprons of 1st floor windows. On 1st floor the 6th window from each end is round-arched, and carried up above eaves into a segment-headed gable, broken in centre to allow a finial placed on the keystone to break through the modillion cornice. At the north end it breaks back for 2 bays, which have 2 square windows per bay in place of the ground floor windows. Other elevations are simplified versions of the principal front.
