Description

The Methodist Church in Up Holland was built in 1860 and has been altered since. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a slate roof. The building is small and rectangular, positioned at right angles to the road. The symmetrical gabled facade has two windows and a round-headed doorway. This doorway is framed by a stone surround with moulded imposts and a keystone, and it has double board doors with a fanlight that contains stained glass. Flanking the doorway are tall round-headed windows with raised sills and stone heads similar to the doorway, featuring early 20th-century joinery and Art Deco stained glass. Above the door is a datestone inscribed with "JUBILEE METHODIST CHURCH 1860 PREPARE TO MEET THY GOD O ISRAEL," and there is a quatrefoil in the gable. To the left, there is a small single-storey extension, and at the rear, there is a 20th-century flat-roofed addition. Above this extension are two square windows with arched glazing, likely with raised sills. The church forms a group with the adjoining buildings at Nos 18 and 20, contributing to a notable collection of vernacular architecture.
