Description

Waterside Mill is a cotton mill dated 1839, as indicated on the wagon entrance. It is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks and features a slate roof, with a chimney located at the right front corner, which has been cut down. The mill has a rectangular plan with 11 windows and stands 3½ storeys tall, gabled towards the road. The front end includes a short, three-storey extension that houses the engine house and chimney, which is integrated into the right-hand corner. To the left of the gable wall is a round-arched wagon entrance with a projecting keystone inscribed "1839." Above this entrance are three vertically aligned windows in reduced openings, likely originally loading doors. The side walls are fitted with vertical rectangular windows that have plain sills and heads, though the glazing has been altered. Notably, the mill features unusual triple gutter brackets. The rear of the building, which is built into a slope, rises to 21 storeys and includes 3-stage loading doors in the center, extending from the second floor to the apex, with a fire escape now leading from the center of these doors. There are also two vertically aligned doors below and to the left, along with various small windows. Inside, the mill has iron columns that support timber beams, which pass through cast iron stirrups at their heads.
