Description
Thuborough Mill is a mill built in the early 19th century, with an addition from the mid-19th century. It features slate stone rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof. The mill is three storeys high, with the ground level dropping at one end, and includes two overshot wheels at the right-hand end. A threshing barn and a store or animal house have been added to the left end.
The exterior presents an asymmetrical elevation facing the river, with a tall cart entrance towards the left-hand side and a window beyond it, which has a loading hatch above. The mill section to the right has a straight joint separating it from the barn. On the top floor, there are two small louvred windows, beneath which the ends of two large beams project, with a small opening below that allows the axle of one of the internal wheels to protrude. The central floor features a six-light overlapping pane window, with a doorway below and a small window to its right. The gable-end wall has a large fixed light window on the top floor, with two original windows below that have overlapping panes for the outer lights and a wooden shutter for the inner light. The two large mill wheels, which have wooden spokes and iron rims, are located below, and the remains of a wooden launder can still be seen above the wheels.
The rear elevation has a large lean-to against its left-hand side, with a doorway into the mill on its left and a wide cart entrance to the right. Beyond this entrance is a narrower doorway with a loading hatch above. Inside, three mill stones and some of the wooden mill workings are still present, along with a 20th-century king post roof.
