Description

Gleaston Cornmill is a mill built in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed from stone rubble and has slate roofs. The original layout was L-shaped, but it later developed into a rectangular plan due to the addition of a re-entrant range. The east elevation features three storeys and four bays; the first two bays belong to the later range, while the second two bays project forward beneath a gable. The windows have segmental heads and small-paned fixed glazing, with lower ventilation panels in the windows of the second two bays. There are two segmental-arched recesses in the first two bays that provide access to entrances on the sides. The south side has two gables and a lean-to outbuilding. The north end contains an unroofed wheelhouse, which houses an iron and timber wheel along with a slate launder. The west elevation features segmental-headed windows and an entrance in the first two bays, while the second two bays include three entrances to the corn drying kiln and storage areas. Inside, the mill retains almost all of its original lowder-type machinery, including three sets of stones and jog-scries. The kiln has a brick cross wall and a tiled floor. The mill was in operation until the late 1940s.
