Description
The Church of St Matthew is a parish church located in Dendron, Aldingham. Originally built in 1642 by a local man who had moved to London, the church was rebuilt in 1795, with a west tower added in 1833. The exterior features wet-dashed rubble on a plinth and a graduated slate roof. The church consists of a five-bay, aisless design with a three-stage tower that includes a double door in a semicircular-headed surround on the west face. There are small semicircular-headed windows with glazing bars on the second stage, and semicircular-headed louvred openings on the third stage, topped with crenellation. Both the east and west ends of the 1795 building have pediments, although the west one is partly obscured by the tower. The church has a single tall storey with five semicircular-headed windows set in recesses on the south side only. A band runs around the building at the level of the springing of the window heads, with an eaves band and cornice also encircling the structure. The east end features blind oculi and niches flanking a small semicircular-headed central window in a recess. The south windows have glazing bars with interlaced heads, while the east window contains square-leaded panes. The interior includes 19th-century pews and fittings.
