Description

Stank Farmhouse and attached farm buildings are a farmhouse and farm structures dating from the 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The buildings are constructed from mixed rubble and yellow sandstone, topped with graduated slate roofs. The elongated range consists of four sections that step up the hillside.

The upper end on the left features two storeys and an attic, with two bays and a deep plan. The 17th-century section to the right is also two storeys with three bays and has a stair outshut at the rear. Next to this is a converted single-bay outbuilding, followed by a two-storey, three-bay farm building with a partial outshut at the rear.

The upper end includes a later stone porch that encloses a chamfered doorway, with a six-pane sash window on the left and two four-pane sashes on the first floor, all featuring projecting stone sills and plain lintels. The ashlar end stacks have plinths and bands. The 17th-century range has an altered exterior with a part-glazed door to the right, another doorway (now a casement), and four-pane sashes, along with paired gutter blocks and an ashlar end stack on the right with a plinth and band.

The adjacent outbuilding has a casement window below a boarded doorway, while the farm building features a central quoined doorway on each floor, a casement window under a stone arch on the left, an altered window to the right, and slit vents beneath the eaves made of red sandstone. The right return has a blocked doorway with voussoirs and vent holes.

Inside the 17th-century section, there are beamed ceilings and a spiral stair with solid oak treads. The first floor has splat-balusters on the landing, oak floorboards, and ledged oak doors, with one pair of cruck blades visible. This complex building merits further detailed study.
