Description

Gleaston Castle is a ruin of a castle, likely built in the early 14th century and abandoned by the late 15th century. The structure is made of dressed stone with some ashlar dressings and has a rectangular plan with rectangular towers at the corners, three of which have substantial remains. There are no visible walls to the north, and the eastern wall is now integrated into nearby farm buildings.

The south-east tower features a pointed entrance on the west side and several pointed windows on the first floor. Inside, there is a staircase within the wall, along with fireplaces on both the ground and first floors, and the remains of a garderobe. The south-west tower has steps leading to a first-floor entrance on the north side, pointed lights, a low undercroft, and fireplaces and garderobes on the first and second floors.

The west wall has substantial remains and may have included a mid-wall tower. There is a blocked entrance at the north end that connects to the north-west tower, which has three sections remaining: north-west, south-west, and east. Pointed windows, some with cusped ogee heads, can still be seen. Additionally, there are remains of a mural passage and a fireplace in the north-west section. This manorial castle was built for defensive purposes and is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
