Description

This building, comprising numbers 20 and 22 Yorkshire Street, was likely originally constructed as a warehouse, later used as a public house, and is now two shops with living accommodation above. It dates to 1770, as indicated by a rainwater head. The building is constructed of watershot coursed sandstone with quoins, and has a stone slate roof with two ridge chimneys and two gable chimneys. It follows a two-bay plan, with a double depth and a front extension. The front elevation presents two gables to the road, with a rainwater head at the valley inscribed with the letter "H". A doorway is centrally positioned on the right, featuring a moulded surround, pilasters, a plain frieze, and a dentilled cornice. The inner porch floor is decorated with mosaic lettering reading "WHITE". A double shop window is to the left, and a single shop window bearing the word "HORSE" is to the right. Each shop window has a wavy pediment enclosing a medallion; the left medallion displays the monogram "MBB" (Massey Burnley Brewery) and is dated 1907. On the first floor, two rectangular windows are present on each side, now top-hung casements. The top floor features a single round-headed window with imposts and a keystone (the left window being sashed). The rear elevation exhibits some altered flush-mullion windows at first floor level. The interior has been altered. While the history of the building is not fully known, it may have been associated with James Howorth, a baize manufacturer from the early 19th century.
