Description
9 and 11 King Street is a house and shop built in the 1860s. It features rock-faced blocks of sandstone with carved and polished stone dressings, topped with a slate roof and gable chimneys. The building has three bays and two storeys.
On the ground floor, the first two bays contain a large original shop front framed by rusticated quoins, consoles, and a decorated entablature. The entrance has recessed panelled doors in the centre, flanked by full-height three-light windows supported by slender columns with shaft-rings. These windows are slightly arched at the top. The third bay to the right has a narrow doorway with plain jambs and carved imposts, along with a sashed window. All windows, including the three on the first floor, are recessed and feature polished stone shafts with foliated capitals, moulded shouldered lintels, and a round intrados with a pointed extrados, accented by banded voussoirs. The first-floor windows have continuous hoodmoulds and there is a modillioned cornice above. The rear wall includes triangular-headed sashed windows.
Historically, this building served as the office for the Bacup Times.
