Description

The Old Market Hall, built in 1867, is a market hall that has a later addition to the west side, which now serves as a timber warehouse. It is constructed from rock-faced sandstone with ashlar bands and dressings. The building features a three-span roof that is both slated and glazed, with chimneys on the side walls. It has a rectangular plan with three rows of eight bays. Due to its location on a sloping site, the east side has three storeys while the west side has two storeys. The design is described as being in the Italian style of architecture.

The front and sides of the building have a projecting cornice. The three-bay front facing Bank Street includes a rusticated ashlar centre bay that contains a giant entrance arch with a coved surround. This is flanked by dentilled panels framed by pilaster strips and topped with a pediment above the cornice. The outer bays feature coupled round-headed windows on each floor, with keystones on the lower windows.

On the left side wall, there is a basement with eight fireproof shops arranged in an arcade of wide segmental arches supported by segmental-headed cast iron beams, which are held up by iron columns. These columns frame a door and a low wall with windows, some of which are sashed, some altered, and others blocked. The floor above has two dentilled panels in each bay, while the top floor features coupled segmental-headed windows.

Inside, the hall has an eight-bay nave and aisles formed by slim iron columns that support segmental-arched lattice girders. The lightweight roof trusses are secured by slender tie-rods.
