Description

The cast iron wall, which was once part of a bridge over the River Irwell, dates from 1883 to 1884 and is located on the south side of South Street in Bacup. Only the right half of the wall remains. It is designed in the Gothic style and consists of five sections, each featuring three Tudor-arched panels and roll-moulded weathered battlements. The left end section, which likely was originally the center of a longer wall, displays a moulded coat of arms for Bacup, along with the motto "HONOR ET INDUSTRIA." The wall is also inscribed with the names and titles: "JOHN HARGREAVES MAYOR 1883-4" at the head and sides, "J. WILSON BOROUGH ENGINEER" above, and "JAMES BARKER & SONS. ENGINEERS BACUP 1883" below.
