Description

Fold House, dated 1772, is a farmhouse with later extensions, now used as a house and cottage. It is constructed from watershot coursed sandstone with a stone slate roof. The roof features chimneys in the centre, at each original gable, at the left gable, and behind the ridge at the right gable. The original building is two bays wide, with an additional bay added to each end, with all but the left addition being double-depth.

The central entrance has a panelled door with a modern, pedimented wooden surround, and a datestone above inscribed “G D M/1772,” reportedly marking Daniel and Margaret Gregory. A modern bay window with a pyramidal slate roof is on the right, with a three-light window above it. To the left are four-light windows on each floor, all with modern wooden mullions. The addition to the left has a three-light window on the first floor and an altered window on the ground floor.

At the right end of the building, Number 1 has a doorway to the right, sheltered by a slab canopy supported on beaked brackets. It has a stepped triple-light window on each floor, and a two-light flush mullion window at first floor on the return wall.

Inside Number 3, features include beams with a small chamfer, a stone dogleg staircase with stout, closely-spaced turned balusters, fielded panel doors, and a “duck’s nest” fireplace in a rear bedroom. A “ratcheted pot-hook” (rackencrook) was found in the chimney of the main ground floor fireplace.
