Description

The Helmshore War Memorial clock tower is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with alterations made after the Second World War. It was designed by James Miller of Glasgow and is made from Fletcher Bank sandstone and bronze.

The memorial is located in a memorial park within the larger Memorial Grounds. It features a slightly tapering square ashlar tower that stands approximately 11 meters tall and measures 3 meters square at the base. The tower has a bold cornice and a lattice window on each side. Above the cornice, the upper stage displays a large square clock face on each side, topped with a pyramid roof above another cornice. A string course encircles the lower part of the tower, and set into the east face is a prominently framed bronze panel with white lettering. This panel is inscribed with a dedication to the glory of God and in grateful remembrance of the services and sacrifices of local citizens, listing the names of the fallen from both World Wars.

The names are arranged by year of death and then alphabetically, with a bronze Tudor crown positioned above the plaque. A moulded plinth surrounds the base of the tower, and a door is located on the west face, likely providing access to the clock mechanism, featuring an architrave that matches the border of the dedication plaque. The memorial is set on a square three-stepped stone base, of which two steps are visible, with grass surrounding the upper step.
