Description
The Museum of the Lancashire Textile Industry is a cotton spinning mill and attached warehouse originally built in the early 19th century and rebuilt in 1859-60 after a fire. It is constructed of sandstone rubble with a slate roof. The rectangular spinning block is 14 bays long, featuring a three-span roof and three storeys. The warehouse extends at the east end, consisting of seven bays and three storeys at a slightly lower level. All windows are segmental-headed, with glazing bars; the ground floor windows are square with nine panes, except at the right end where they have been altered to serve as doors. The upper floors have rectangular windows with twelve panes. The warehouse includes three vertically-aligned loading doors in the fourth bay, a basket-arched wagon tunnel to the right, and segmental-headed nine-pane windows. Inside, there are iron columns supporting wooden beams. The ground floor has been altered, while the first floor has been restored as a spinning room, which is equipped with working mules among other features.
