Description
Kiln Field Farmhouse is primarily an 18th-century farmhouse, with evidence of earlier construction, and has undergone alterations. It is built of sandstone rubble with roofs of stone slate and slate, and has gable chimneys to the front range and a ridge chimney to the rear range. The house has an L-shaped layout, comprising two single-depth, two-bay ranges joined at right angles. The two-storey front range, facing east, has a two-stage plinth. A glazed double door is located in the second bay, with a sash window above. There are three similar windows in the first bay, two at ground floor level. Traces of old flush mullion windows are visible on both floors. A two-storey gabled porch projects at the junction of the ranges. The left return wall features the porch, which has a large rectangular lintel, an inner stone side bench, an old studded board door, and a small square window on the first floor. A single-storey outbuilding, continuing the line of the front wall, partially embraces the porch. The rear range has two two-light casements on each floor. Irregular lean-to additions are present at the left end. A three-light flush mullion window and a doorway are set into the rear wall, leading to a sunken vaulted chamber covered by a mound. The interior features thick stone walls and beams of varying size and quality.
