Description
The gateway to Rawtenstall Cemetery, dating from the late 19th century, features four stone piers and iron gates in a Gothic style. The piers are made of dressed sandstone, square in section, and approximately 3 metres high. They have slightly tapered pedestals, foliated shafts at the corners, an arcaded frieze, a hollow cornice adorned with ball flower ornament, and carved trefoil-faced caps that display crosses, flowers, crowns, and the letters "RC" on the outer ends. The gates are designed with ornamental open-work. There is a low boundary wall without railings, and originally matching piers at the outer ends of these walls are now damaged and not included in the listing.
