Description

The National Westminster Bank, built around 1880, is an L-shaped bank located on a corner site in Rawtenstall on Bank Street. It is designed in the Renaissance style and constructed of ashlar with a hipped slate roof featuring ridge chimneys. The building has two storeys and includes a corner turret.

The ground floor showcases channelled rustication and a moulded and carved cornice. On the right side of the Bank Street facade, there is a round-headed porch with a dentilled cornice. Above this porch, a triple window of round-headed sashes is situated on the first floor. At the left end, there is a rectangular tripartite window on each floor, along with a rectangular window next to the door.

The cylindrical turret, which is corbelled and supported on brackets at the left corner, rises from the first floor. It features narrow curved sashes at the first floor, a panelled band, and a carved frieze. The turret culminates in a belvedere with very narrow windows between shafts adorned with carved capitals, a console cornice, and a lead-clad ogival domed roof topped with a finial.

The left return wall of the building is longer, with a wide central bay that is slightly set back. This bay contains four rectangular windows at the ground floor and a row of six round-headed sashes above. The flanking bays feature tripartite sashed windows, with the upper windows having projecting sills and cornices on consoles. It should be noted that the left ground floor window has been altered.
