Description
The tower of the former Holly Mount School, built in 1839 by Messrs Whitehead as a factory school, is located in Old Fold Garden. It is constructed of dressed sandstone and designed in the Gothic style, featuring a rectangular plan with three diminishing stages. The tower has diagonal buttresses, set-offs at each stage, battlements, and crocketed pinnacles, with a clock face positioned at the third stage. At ground level, there is a large decorated datestone, likely once part of a door head, which forms a semi-circular arch with raised lettering that reads "1839" and "HOLLY MOUNT SCHOOL." Above this, a plaque indicates that Old Fold Garden was the site of Holly Mount School. The tower serves as a prominent landmark in the area.
