Description
The war memorial in Rawtenstall Cemetery is a community memorial erected in September 1915, initiated by Councillor Carrie Whitehead, JP, of Rawtenstall, and made by Joseph Harling of Rawtenstall. It is constructed from pale grey granite and features incised inscriptions. The memorial has a square base made up of three steps, which supports a square die that is also inscribed. Atop this is a plain cross on a square base of two steps. This memorial is notable as the earliest known community war memorial erected during World War I, originally commemorating only the deceased from two council wards in Rawtenstall.
