Description

Smelthwaites Farmhouse is a house built in 1688, with some alterations. It is constructed from slobbered sandstone rubble and has a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys. The front wall faces south and features sashed windows with plain stone surrounds. There are three windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, situated between two chimney stacks. To the right of the right-hand stack, there is a window on each floor. To the left of this, a door with a plain stone surround has a shaped lintel above it, inscribed with 'GC AC 1688'. A modern garage entrance is located at the far right.

The rear wall, between the two chimneys, contains two one-light chamfered blocked windows—one on the left and one towards the centre, the latter having a segmental head. Between these is a tall 18th-century three-light window with square mullions. To the right, there is a three-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window. On the first floor, there are two windows with plain stone surrounds; the left-hand window is fixed with glazing bars, while the right-hand window is sashed. At the far left, the building widens, featuring a six-pane sash window with plain reveals on the ground floor and an outshut further left. Inside, there are two chamfered ceiling beams.
