Description

The Old School is a former school building dating from 1842. It is constructed of squared watershot sandstone with a slate roof. The building is one storey and four bays wide, with projecting furrowed quoins. The stone window surrounds are chamfered, featuring chamfered central mullions and hoods. Original diagonal iron glazing bars remain in the windows, with the exception of the left-hand lights in bays 3 and 4. A steep gable with coping and a stone bellcote is centrally positioned on the façade, beneath which is a door with a chamfered stone surround. An inscribed plaque above the door reads: 'NEWTON NATIONAL SCHOOL ERECTED A.D. 1842'. The left-hand gable has a coping and an octagonal chimney cap.
