Description
The Old Reading Room is a house built in the late 18th century and 1830. It was restored in the 1960s when a third storey was removed. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with sandstone dressings and has a slate roof. It has two storeys, and the south wall features furrowed quoins. To the right, there is a two-light window with a plain stone surround and a square mullion. To the left of this window is a door with a plain stone surround, and further left is a wide opening with a segmental head and furrowed voussoirs. On the first floor, there is a six-light weaving window with square mullions and stone gutter brackets. The rear wall is partly built into the hillside. The low ground-floor windows have plain stone surrounds, while the two first-floor windows also have plain stone surrounds, with the left-hand window being a two-light window with a square mullion. The central doorway is approached by stone steps and features a plain stone surround with a semi-circular head, projecting keystone, and imposts. The tympanum above the door is made of worn sandstone and is inscribed with 'APN 1830'.
