Description

Pigot House is a farmhouse dating to 1655, with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, and has a slate roof. The house has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a single-depth two-bay front with a rear stair turret. It is two storeys high and nearly symmetrical. The front doorway is offset to the right and has large jambstones and a lintel bearing the worn inscription "P 1655 G E", along with a hoodmould. There are two sash windows at ground floor and three above. Remains of earlier openings are visible on both floors to the left. Gable chimneys are present. The right gable wall contains an inserted door and a small window at ground floor, and at first floor, two double-recessed windows with hoodmoulds, each with two lights and a cavetto-moulded mullion, and a single light. The rear elevation has similar cavetto-mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. In the first bay, there are three and two lights on each floor (linked hoodmoulds at ground floor), with the stair turret breaking the ends of the hoodmoulds. The second bay has three lights at first floor. The stair turret rises above the eaves and features a two-light window and a single light at attic level. Inside, there are tongue-stopped chamfered beams; a spiral newel-post staircase ascends to the attic; timber-framed first-floor partitions; and original batten and board doors with pull handles. The building’s plan, with a central door and lateral passage leading to the stair, is either an unusually early example in the area or a later alteration.
