Description

No. 16 Slyne Road is a house that likely dates from the mid-18th century, with some remains from the 17th century. The building is constructed of cobbles with sandstone dressings. The front roof is covered with slate, while the rear slope uses concrete tiles. The windows are 20th-century brown-stained casements set in plain stone surrounds, which have had their sills lowered. Originally, the windows were likely designed as two lights with a central flat-faced mullion. There is a blocked light to the left of the left-hand window on the ground floor, indicating that it may have originally had three lights. The central doorway features a stone surround typical of the mid-18th century, with a slight chamfer. The house has gable chimneys. The left-hand quoins change color at the first-floor window sill level, suggesting that the eaves may have been raised. The right-hand quoins are partly from the gable of an earlier, lower building that once stood adjacent but has since been demolished. On the rear elevation, there are two small rebated and chamfered window surrounds of 17th-century style on each floor, which were formerly two lights but now have had their mullions removed, along with a chamfered stair window. These features may have been reused from an earlier building, as the depth of the current house suggests an 18th-century date.
