Description

Bare Hall is a house, now used as an old people's home, likely built around 1830. It is constructed of sandstone with a slate roof and has two storeys. The main part of the house, located on the left, features ashlar stonework and a symmetrical design, with a sill band beneath the first-floor windows, a cornice, and a blocking course. The facade consists of three bays, with late 20th-century top-hung casement windows that have glazing bars, painted brown, replacing the original glazing bar sashes but fitting in the original openings. On the ground floor, there are stone canted bay windows. The outer bays on the first floor contain paired windows with a central stone mullion.

A stone porch, supported by unfluted Greek Doric columns with pilaster responds, has a cornice and blocking course. To the right of the main house are three bays faced with narrow courses of squared stone, which appear to have similar detailing to the main facade, suggesting they may have been built around the same time. The first floor has a blind sill, and the outer bays feature paired windows with stone surrounds. The ground floor includes stone canted bay windows, with the right-hand one replacing a doorway, constructed from re-used stone and topped with a slated pitched roof.

The left-hand return wall has a re-used stone door surround leading to a parallel range at the rear, featuring a moulded triangular pediment above plain stone jambs, suggesting a mid-18th-century date. A central carved inscription, now indecipherable, is said to have read 'J L H 1830', which likely indicates the date of the current building, originally known as 'New Hall', built by John or James Lodge.
