Description

3 and 5 Thorpe Avenue is a house that was formerly divided into two homes. It dates from the late 17th century and has later additions and 19th-century alterations. The building is constructed of roughcast rubble and has a slate roof, standing two storeys tall. The south-west facade, which faces the garden, features 20th-century casement windows set in painted stone surrounds. The main part of the house has two bays and a central glazed porch. To the left, there is an additional bay with a doorway to its right, which has a plain stone surround. Inside the glazed porch, the door surround has moulding on the jambs that continues upwards to create a pattern on the lintel, inscribed with 'RCM 1687'.

The rear elevation, facing Thorpe Avenue, retains some 17th-century mullioned windows with rebated and chamfered surrounds in the main part of the house. The ground floor windows include one, two, and three lights, while the first floor has a single light window. Inside, the main fireplace has been altered, and a partition wall has been removed. The staircase features a straight flight with a closed string and turned balusters, which appear to date from around 1700. The right-hand front room contains the original parlour fireplace, complete with architrave moulding, a keystone, a mantel, and stylised flower and plant motifs.
