Description
Lower Swinton is a house, now divided into two houses, dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and features a machine tile roof. The building has a double depth plan and stands two storeys high with five bays. The exterior includes chamfered quoins and a central half-glazed door framed by a moulded stone architrave. The windows are predominantly 16-pane casements, with the two left-hand bays featuring 20th-century 12-pane casements, while the central bay and the bay to its left have 12-pane casements with wooden mullions. One left-hand window is blocked and has a stone mullion. All windows are adorned with moulded stone surrounds, and there is a moulded stone eaves cornice. The ends of the building have stacks, and the rear side features an arched stair window with a moulded stone surround.
Inside, there is a late 17th-century staircase with twist balusters. The front room showcases late 17th-century panelling with Ionic pilasters and a very fine carved stone fireplace.
