Description
The Craig Convalescent Home for Children is a house dating from around 1840, now serving as a children's home. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a punched finish and features hipped slate roofs. The building has a symmetrical design with a 1:3:1 composition, characterized by a plain frieze beneath oversailing moulded eaves and a central block that projects forward. Each side of the central block has wings that contain a window and a glazed door on the ground floor, with a single window above. The windows are glazing bar sashes. The central porch is adorned with pilasters featuring incised borders, a cornice, and a blocking course that supports railings with a central metal crest. There are chimneys on either side of the central block. Inside, the stair hall located at the rear of the entrance hall includes a dog-leg stair with an open string, stick balusters, and a mahogany handrail. Originally named 'The Parks', the house became known as the Craig Home in 1934.
