Description
The Outer Archway at Martholme is a gate arch located in Great Harwood, dated 1607. It is constructed from random rubble with stone dressings. The arch features a moulded semi-circular head and is topped with a striking crow-stepped coping that has a finial. Above the apex of the arch on the south side, there is a carved stone displaying a shield, which is inscribed with the letters "R" and "H" (representing Robert Hesketh) and the year "16" and "07" in the bottom corners.
