Description
The gatehouse at Martholme, dated 1561, is constructed of sandstone rubble with quoins and features a restored stone slate roof, complete with gable copings, kneelers, and a finial on the left gable. It has two chimneys, one on the ridge and another at the right gable. The building has a three-bay rectangular plan and stands two storeys high, with symmetrical front and rear facades.
The central feature on the front is a wide rounded and chamfered arch, which was originally open but is now glazed. Above this arch is a square recess that holds a cast plaque displaying a shield and helm, with the years "15" and "61" inscribed at the bottom corners. The first floor features a large mullion and transom window with eight round-headed lights, while there are two additional windows on each floor, all with three round-headed lights. The rear facade mirrors the front but lacks side windows on the first floor.
On the left side, there is a similar three-light window on the first floor and a pointed light on the ground floor. A modern addition is present at the right end, which includes ex situ furnishings. The gatehouse has been recently restored from a derelict condition.
