Description

The gate arch, located approximately 30 meters south of the south front of Winwick Manor House, dates from the early 17th century and is constructed of limestone ashlar. It features a semi-circular stone arch framed by pairs of engaged fluted Doric columns set on square plinths with panelled fronts. Between the columns, there are panels adorned with elaborate strapwork. The spandrels of the arch contain modillions with foliated surrounds. Above the arch is an entablature with a frieze decorated with alternating ox skulls and roundels, topped by a cornice. The center of the structure is crowned with a semi-circular pediment that displays a coat of arms and a finial on a square base, flanked by small triangular pediments with similar finials. The gateway is backed by plain brickwork on the garden side, suggesting it may have originally served as a porch for the Manor House before being relocated to its current position.
