Description

Pytchley Gates are an early 17th-century archway constructed from limestone ashlar. The main gate arch is flanked by two smaller pedestrian arches, each with a semi-circular head and a carved keystone. The central arch features a decorated voussoir. A fluted Doric column sits between the arches, supporting an entablature with a frieze decorated with triglyphs and disc ornaments in the metopes. Curved gables top the archway and scrollwork adorns the pedestrian arches. Five obelisks, set on moulded plinths, are located at the centre and ends of the structure. 19th-century cast iron gates are present in each arch. Originally part of Pytchley Old Hall, the gates were repositioned in the mid-19th century.
