Description

Overstone College is a country house built in the mid-19th century by W.M. Tuelon for the first Lord Overstone. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a slate roof with a complex plan. The garden front has three storeys and a five-window range of sash windows. To the left, there is a large canted bay with rusticated pilasters and an open balustrade above, with twin sashes and a pediment featuring armorial embellishment above. The central square bay has an open parapet and a gable above with pilasters, a semi-circular head, and a finial. The house has hipped roofs with ashlar stacks at the ridge and ends.

To the right, a large square tower projects forward and consists of four stages, with an open belvedere in the fourth stage featuring a double arcade supported by twin columns and rusticated pilasters at the corners. The open balustrade is adorned with large corner pilasters topped by groups of ball finials. To the right of the tower, there is a two-storey, five-window range with a canted bay on the left and a corner bay on the right, both styled similarly to the main house. A short square tower on the far right has three stages, with a triple arcade in the third stage, rusticated pilasters at the corners, and a shallow copper pyramid roof. A low wall with urns is attached to the centre of the garden.

The entrance front mirrors the garden front's style, featuring a central single-storey porch with large rusticated pilasters. Above the porch is a semi-circular gable with scroll embellishment. There is a large canted bay to the left and a square bay to the right, similar to the garden front. The interior includes a large entrance hall with a central staircase that splits into two flights at the quarter landing, featuring a turned balustrade with a swept handrail and moulded marble surrounds to the openings. The chapel to the right has a fine moulded plaster ceiling. The library at the centre of the garden front includes fireplaces and bookcases with moulded wood surrounds and two large mirrored overmantels, along with moulded plaster ceilings featuring Jacobean motifs.
