Description

Rhododendron Cottage is a cruck-framed cottage dating from the 17th century or earlier, likely re-walled and possibly raised in the 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th century. The cottage has been recently renovated and features whitewashed brick and a thatched roof. A chimney is located behind the ridge at the junction of the first and second bays, with a double chimney at the left gable.

The cottage consists of three bays and stands one and a half storeys tall. There is a board door at the junction of the first and second bays, a 12-pane sliding sash window to the left, another to the right, and a small 4-pane sliding sash in the third bay, all with simple brick labels above. The right gable has a small sliding sash window at ground floor level and a larger one near the apex. The rear of the cottage features three small sliding sash windows at ground level and another in the eaves of the second bay.

Inside, the housepart in the second bay contains a full cruck truss at each end, both featuring raised tie beams, collars, and yokes, likely altered in the 18th century with the addition of spurs and dorsals to raise the eaves. During this time, the housepart ceiling was inserted, and the collar of the second truss was severed to create a door at first floor level. The upper part of the first truss and parts of the ridge in the center of the second bay show smoke blackening, and staves remain in situ between the collar and yoke of the first truss.
