Description

TREALES, WHARLES AND CROSS LANE SD 43 SW ROSEACRE Moorside , Treales 9/72 Rhododendron Cottage 10.2.81 - II

Cruck-framed cottage, C17 or earlier, probably re-walled and perhaps raised in C18, extended in C19; recently renovated. Whitewashed brick, thatched roof with a chimney behind the ridge at the junction of the 1st and 2nd bays, double chimney at left gable. Three bays, one and 1½ storeys; board door at junction of 1st and 2nd bays, a 12-pane sliding sash window to the left, another to the right, and a little 4-pane sliding sash to the 3rd bay, all these with simple brick labels above them; right gable has small sliding sash at ground floor, a larger one near to the apex; rear has 3 small sliding sashes at ground floor, another in the eaves of the 2nd bay. Interior: housepart in 2nd bay has a full cruck truss at each end, both with (raised) tie beams, collar, and yoke, both probably altered in C18 by addition of spurs and dorsals to raise the eaves; at which time the housepart ceiling was inserted and the collar of the 2nd truss severed to make a door at 1st floor level; upper part of 1st truss and parts of ridge in centre of 2nd bay have smoke blackening; staves in situ between collar and yoke of 1st truss.
